Ms. J. Barrow, Math -Archived

Dear Math Student Parents,

My name is Mrs. Barrow, and I am one of the 8th grade math teachers.  I’m excited to be in my 18th year of teaching.  I’m originally from Miami, Florida.  My husband and our 6 children relocated to Georgia in 2007.  I attended Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and earned my Bachelors in Health Administration. I then attend Nova South Eastern University in Davie, Florida and earned my Masters in Math Education.  I have been blessed to travel extensively and I love sharing my experiences with our students as we prepare them to thrive in an international society.

Your child cannot be successful without a joint, collaborative partnership between you and me.  I want your child to be a great achiever and will do all I can do to accommodate your child and provide a safe, orderly, respectful, and innovative learning environment.  I will begin tutoring on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 from 3:15 to 4:15 pm.  I will also provide your son/daughter different websites to help them excel or to get the help they need.  Please periodically check your child’s grades (Infinite Campus), notebook and work to ensure they are meeting your expectations.  It really does take a village to ensure the success of our students.

This year presents new challenges with standardized testing and reading and writing across the different content areas.  This will be our third year taking the Georgia Milestone Assessment.  The new test requires far more critical thinking and students are required to explain what, how and why they are solving math problems the way they do. To prepare for the new testing, your child will be doing more writing and reading in math.  He/she will have to write complete paragraphs to explain processes.  Please ensure your child is reading, writing, and completing homework assignments (Monday – Thursday).  GMAS is to help students be more competitive globally whether they are entering college or the workplace.

I believe all students can learn and do well.  We have to help them find out how they learn best and make content relevant and engaging.  I’ve already begun to ask students many questions to get them to go deeper and understand why they are performing certain mathematical processes.  They may get frustrated solving problems in a new way, but please encourage them to endure and don’t take any shortcuts.  In the long run their perseverance and tenacity will be rewarding.

Parents, I am eager to help shape and mold the minds of our young learners in the realm of mathematics.   Math is learned through repeated practice and hard work. Let's share the experience of ensuring our students succeed in 8th grade mathematics!  Don’t forget you can access more information and assignments on my teacher website (from Clayton County Public School’s website).  If you have any questions or would like to schedule a conference, please contact me at (770) 472-2850 or [email protected] (preference).
